Nio Recalls 686 Firefly EVs in China Over Steering System Defect
Nio is recalling 686 Firefly electric vehicles manufactured between March 20 and April 2, 2026, due to a steering column torque sensor defect that could result in loss of power steering assistance. The company will conduct free inspections and replace wiring harnesses where manufacturing-related interference is detected.
China's State Administration for Market Regulation announced the recall on September 18, 2026, under recall number S2026M0114V. The defect stems from manufacturing process variations that may create physical interference between the steering column torque sensor's wiring harness and rotor in select units produced during a narrow window in early spring.
This interference could trigger abnormal sensor signals and illuminate the electronic steering system warning light, potentially causing loss of power steering assistance and creating a safety hazard. Nio will conduct complimentary inspections of all affected vehicles to identify any harness-to-rotor contact and replace the wiring harness where necessary to eliminate the risk.
The company will contact affected owners through its mobile application, SMS messages, and direct phone calls to schedule recall service. Several vehicles have already completed inspections and corrective repairs and require no further action. The recall takes effect immediately following regulatory notification.
